2011 Issue #1                                                                                        February 2011

I promised myself that I would not ever try to finish a book in December and totally ruin the holidays. I’ve kept that one. This December, however, Marta wanted to film her jeans DVD, so we started that Dec. 15. And Melissa came home from New York for Christmas and sewed two jackets from her new pattern! Then Marta wanted to put the 4-day serger workshop into a DVD home study course, which we did in January while finishing the jeans DVD.

Then in February, Katrina Walker and I shot a DVD on how to buy the right fabrics for your pattern. We even filmed Ethel shopping with us using our color palettes. This past week, we’ve had the Fit-a-thon Sewing Vacation (sold out!), and that will be followed by the big consumer sewing show in Puyallup. Never a dull moment!!

I hope your 2010 ended well. Let me know if you are teaching and please share your successes and challenges. The other teachers like to hear from you through this newsletter.

JEANS FOR REAL PEOPLE—WHAT WE LEARNED

Marta has really perfected sewing all the jeans details, so if you want to sew jeans for yourself, just follow along with her. FYI, you can’t get the jeans fit on the model on the left unless you have that body. We really tried. But it requires a full, high bum—which neither Marta nor I have. With the help of Nancy Seifert during a fall pant workshop, we really experimented with everything, including a more bias center back seam. It just verified what we already knew. To have an angled center back seam, you need to be angled. If you are flat, you need a straighter center back seam or you will get a bubble and fullness in the back. So in the back, our jeans fit more like any other pant. (Marta doesn’t like tight jeans, so hers really fit like any other fitted pant.) We did find, however, that if you have to lower the back crotch in regular pants, then if you want a short, tight crotch depth in jeans, you need to lower the back sit room about three times what you usually do.

PUYALLUP SEW EXPO

It is coming up almost too soon! We have lots to do to prepare for our seminars and the fashion show. Many of you are attending. If you want to see what Marta and I will be teaching, visit www.palmerpletsch.com “Where’s Pati” -- http://www.palmerpletsch.com/patipalmer_schedule.htm.

We have also included Katrina Walker’s classes on textiles, since she did the fabric DVD with me. Marta’s interfacing classes sold out, so another was added on Friday afternoon—who would have known? Are you teaching interfacing classes? Take a look at Marta’s description for copy ideas for your classes. Remember, we have an interfacing PowerPoint seminar available. See teacher resources on our website.

SERGER HOME STUDY COURSE AND TEACHER TRAINING

If you haven’t taken our serger workshop but are interested in teaching serger classes, get the new home study course and make the sample notebook (most fabrics are included). Send it to us for “grading” and once we accept it, you will qualify to teach serging under the Palmer/Pletsch name. We also have a CD with over 200 slides for teaching serger seminars. It also includes all the updated notebook pages. Learn more...

FYI, if you have purchased the serger teacher training CD, I would like to send you a new one at no charge, because the home study course gave me a chance to update the notebook pages and improve the marketing materials on the CD. Just send me an e-mail: patipalmer@aol.com

McCALLS PATTERNS NEWS

MELISSA
JOINS THE PALMER/PLETSCH LINE

My daughter, Melissa Watson, is now part of the Palmer/Peltsch line of patterns at McCall's.

Some of you knew me even before there WAS a Melissa, or remember my being pregnant and teaching our first serger workshops. Melissa slept in a basket on the floor at McCall’s in New York for the first time when she was just two months old. Later, she would stand by Marta and me to hand out your workshop diplomas at graduation dinners. So I guess fashion sewing is in her blood. McCall’s wanted her patterns to be under the Palmer/Pletsch brand so people would know that her patterns would include fitting help. Her first pattern, this jacket, is one that Marta and I are both making. The next one is a bustier dress that I am not likely to be seen in, but that we hope will inspire young fashionistas to sew.

I like the lines of this pattern. I thought you’d like to see her original sketch of this design, just for fun!

Melissa has been learning to design on the computer by taking courses on Adobe Illustrator at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She is loving it! And she is working for Ralph Lauren at the moment. OK, enough from this proud mom. But I will say we are having a ball working together—it is the best thing ever!

BE LISTED ON OUR WEBSITE

Certified Sewing Instructors, beginning sewing teachers, and teachers of the Winky Cherry System of Teaching Children to Sew are listed in our online teacher directories. I hear from many of you that you do get students from being listed on our website. I am lax in tracking CSI renewals, so some of you may be listed who haven’t renewed. Or you may not yet be certified. Your annual fee basically covers the time that Marta, Linda, and I spend updating the Web listing, processing the order, sending you your certificate, and so on. We’d love to see ALL of our teachers listed to show we are several hundred strong and so that more people can find a Palmer/Pletsch teacher. So check your last CSI certificate to see your renewal date, or send in your application.

We will be doing a major Web update in late March. Do you have any ideas for how we can make the listing even better for you? Please share.

Here are the links to the current directory pages:

NEWS FROM YOU

GAIL DUDLEY
Steamboat Springs, CO

My partner and I opened Sew Steamboat the day before Thanksgiving. We are located in a small, rural ski resort in the corner of Colorado close to Utah and Wyoming. We sell fashion fabric, quilt fabric, and yarn. We also teach lots of classes. We are the only store in the area that offers this type of product, especially since Walmart got rid of most of their supplies. People have been coming in saying, “Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for opening this store!” I had my first in-store sewing class last week and had three never-ever sewers (1 man and 2 women) make a bag and be thrilled about it. They can’t wait to come back next week to make the next thing in their desire to sew. I have the best arrangement. I have a partner who really knows nothing about sewing, so she does all the business. I get to do all the fun stuff! If any sewers are in the area, drop in and have a cup of tea with us.

LOOKING GOOD AUTHOR NANCY, NIX-RICE,
Palmer/Pletsch Certified Sewing Instructor, St. Louis, MO

Nancy, who is the author of Looking Good and star of the DVD Looking Good, Live, has a new FREE style newsletter that is just great. I thought you might want to sign up for it. Nancy says:

In 2011 I’m resolving to make wardrobe and image services more easily accessible in more ways to more women regardless of their budget or their location. For starters, I’m introducing “A New You in 52” - a yearlong plan to revitalize or even reinvent the visible part of yourself in SMALL STEPS.

Each week you’ll get an email from me about one manageable topic in the wardrobe/appearance arena. If that topic fits a need in your life, just click through to access the entire lesson. If not, just wait for next week’s topic.

Before you know it you’ll be more confident of looking like a million every time you walk out the door. The small steps avoid the burnout potential of the all-or-nothing approach we typically bring to resolutions. And this time next year you can have the effortlessly polished appearance you’ve always wanted, regardless of your weight, your age, your busy schedule, or your budget.

The whole program is FREE. You may choose to invest in some new clothing, accessories or services along the way ... but the advice and guidance cost you nada, zip, zilch ... nothing.

Cheers!

CONNIE HAMILTON,
Palmer/Pletsch Certified Sewing Instructor, Hartwell, GA

A lot of my teaching this past year has come from my listing on your website, including a weekly sewing student who has been a lot of fun. Thank you for providing that advertising for us! The opportunities resulting from the P/P website were especially welcome. Everything was going pretty much on schedule until mid-December when I got a virus and didn’t accomplish much for almost two weeks, and then the South’s big snowstorm shut down the WHOLE state for a week. Even the new governor’s inauguration gala was cancelled! They just aren’t equipped to deal with 7 inches of snow topped with ice down here.
