Learn to Sew
a Jacket

FIVE-DAY WORKSHOP

Sew any any jacket style depending on your skill level. We will guide your choice. Return to take on more challenges. Marta Alto, lead teacher, will hold your hand while teaching you our best jacket methods.

Prerequisite is Fit.

Truly, all of your sewing will improve after you learn to tailor. We will cover the different tailoring methods, interfacings, and the parts of a jacket. You will select a good fabric and a pattern, based on your skills, from our preselected patterns for different skill levels. If you have never sewn a jacket, choose one with fewer details to sew. At a minimum you will learn cutting and marking accuracy, interfacings and proper fusing, fit, shoulder and chest shaping, shaped darts, careful trimming and quality pressing, sleeve heads, bound buttonholes, patch pockets, linings, and perfect hems. More advanced techniques will be demonstrated, but you need not make samples or use them in your jackets until you come again.

Take Learn to Sew a Jacket again.
Since it is difficult to learn ALL in one workshop, we hope you’ll return so you can master and expand your tailoring skills. Returnees may add new challenges or try new fabrics under our supervision. If you didn’t do welt pockets or a notched collar the first time, do it now. Add challenges such as re-designing a pattern, adding details you want to perfect, or having new jacket patterns fitted to you. We will demonstrate ways to truly perfect your tailoring skills and carefully guide you as you fit and sew. Plus, you will be sewing under our expert guidance.

And again.
If you want to become a MASTER tailor or because you teach or sew for others, come back as often as you like. You will try new techniques, and challenging fabrics,
and continue to perfect your skills. You can watch fittings, and fit yourself, in new jacket styles.
