 McCall's 6513 Figure-Flattering Wrap Tops

Wrap tops are very feminine and great to wear, especially when they fit correctly. The lighter-weight knits are very forgiving in wrap style tops, so unless you have large adjustments to make, you could bypass smaller ones you usually make, except for broad back, forward shoulder, and high and low round back. If you are a C bra cup size, even though patterns are made for a B, you can get away without altering for a full bust. However, if you are very full busted, you will get a better fit by altering. See tips in the guidesheet.

Views A/B have gathers across the tummy which will camouflage if you have "fluff" there. Views C/D have gathers on one side and from the neck creating diagonal gathers over the front, which are very feminine. The wrap is high enough that you won’t have to worry about too much cleavage showing or the front gapping when you bend over.

Don’t waste time sewing a garment that doesn’t fit! Tissue-fit the pattern before you cut. To make altering easier, we have placed alteration lines on the pattern tissue for the most common adjustments. Tuck or cut and spread at these lines until the pattern fits you.

KNITS AND FIT

A note about knits. Most of the time, you don't want the knit to STREEEEEETCH to fit you and show every little lump and bump on your body. However, for this top, you will want some stretch because of the waist gathers.  f in doubt about how tight you want your knit to fit, then tissue-fit as if it were a woven. You can always take in the side seams to make the top tighter. That is why we also tell you when to pin-fit your fabric. The pattern is drafted pretty much to body measurements with little or no ease added. If your measurements are the same as your pattern, it should fit in lightweight knits. If the knit is heavier and firm, you will want more ease.

 McCall's 6464 Misses Dress

Dress with Lined Bodice

This is a figure-flattering dress with a lined bodice, front darts and side back seams, and darted skirt. All the sleeve variations are interchangeable. The high waist curves up in the front creating a flattering angle. The center front panel adds vertical lines. If you have a full waist or thighs, choose the A-line skirt. The tissue has alteration lines to help you achieve a perfect fit. Glance through the guide before you begin!

Available in sizes B5 (8-16)
and P5 (16-24)

Reg. price is $19.95
Our price is $10.95

 McCall's 6441 Misses Jacket

Princess Seam Jacket with Zip Front
.
This is a simple to sew jacket with princess seams, zip front and optional sleeve hem details such as a slit, an invisible zipper, roll-up sleeves, or plain hem. Learn to easily alter using alteration lines printed on the tissue and fit tips in the guide. Think outside the box. Eliminate the zipper for a super easy cardigan. Make it longer or shorter in length. Make it in a stretch-woven or  a double-knit. Use a solid color, a print, or a jacquard for evening. Try it in faux fur. Make the zipper a contrast or matching.

Available in sizes BB (8-14) and E5 (14-22)

Reg. price is $19.95
Our price is $10.95

 McCall's 6440 Misses Pant

Skinny Pant with Contour Waistline.
A skinny pant with a contour waistline and an optional pocket below the front band. Loosen up the fit if you plan to use it for your cell phone! The hem has design options: plain, invisible side zipper, slits, or self cuffs. Because there is a seam over your derriere, we have suggested that is where to take the pattern in to fit your shape, even if you are flat in the back. Follow the tissue-fitting and fabric-fitting instructions in the guidesheet.

Stretch fabrics will give you more bending power in this fitted pant. If you use wool gabardine or other non-stretch fabric, try bending and sitting with the side seams pinned. If uncomfortable, let out the 1” side seam allowances from upper hip to the thighs until you can easily sit.

Available in sizes A5 (6-14)
and EE (14-20)

Reg. price is $19.95
Our price is $10.95

 McCall's 6399 Misses Tops

The Day-to-Evening Top for Knits,
Wovens, or Stretch-Wovens
.

I love this feminine top with neckline and sleeve options. Soft tucks replace darts at the bustline, neckline, and waist. It is pretty fitted with just 2” bust ease, which makes it perfect when cut on the bias or from a knit. If you use a stretch woven or knit, cut so the most stretch is horizontal, going around your body. When fitting, decide if you need the side zipper opening. Pin or baste the side seams and if you can get it on over your head, you can eliminate the zipper and make it easier to sew.

Available in sizes B5 (8-16) and FF (16-22)

Reg. price is $19.95
Our price is $10.95

McCall's 6282 The Feminine & Flattering Top or Dress

High or Low Cowl Neckline Top or Dress

This soft drapey top or dress has a high or low cowl neckline with soft gathers around the waist at sides and center back to camouflage any extra fluff you may have. The pattern is for knits. It is lined to the edge with a soft tricot. The back zipper is optional. If you are full busted, you will probably need it to get the top on and off. I show you how to fit the tissue and the fabric with lots of tips for knits included.

The below-the-hip, unlined jacket has a back band, two-piece sleeves with slits, a draped lapel, and purchased bias tape finish. The wrong side of fabric will show. The  pullover, straight top, and dress have scoop necklines with front gathers and self neck binding; The top has self armhole binding. The dress is above mid-knee length with short sleeves and stitched hem. The pull-on, straight-legged pants have elastic waistline casing and side slits with stitched hems, pants are 1" below waist.  McCall's 6211 Shawl Collar Vest and Jacket with Pants

Misses' Lined Vest and Jacket, Belt and Pants

This vest and jacket pattern has an easy shawl collar. The jacket has a drop shoulder. The backs on both have a peplum and an inverted pleat with topstitching. We didn't bring the peplum to the front, since, if you have a tummy, the seam can be difficult to fit in the front. Most of us have a curve at the waistline in the back and the peplum seam works well with that.

The pants have straight legs, front and back darts, back invisible zipper and ribbon waist finishing. The top of the pants falls 1/2" below the waist.

Sizes  BB (8-14), FF (16-22)

McCall's 6172 Classic Fit: The Perfect Jacket

The New 8-Hour Blazer by Pati Palmer

A little history: What do John Molloy, Family Circle Magazine, 1980, and Pati Palmer have in Common?

By total coincidence, in 1980 Family Circle approached Pati to write an article on sewing blazer jackets for women. At the same time, she was designing the innovative 8-hour Blazer, her first pattern  for McCall’s. John Molloy's book Dress for Success was catching on. He told women that if they wanted to get ahead in the corporate world, they needed to dress like men. Timing is everything. There were no blazers for women at retail, so women sewed them. Pati's pattern sold more copies than any pattern in history that year--one million copies.

On this 30-year anniversary of Pati Palmer designing for McCall's, she has developed the latest edition of her 8-hour blazer pattern, even more innovative than the first, focusing on the latest technology in shaping fabrics and in fitting today's female figure. The many seams allow for great fitting opportunities. There are alteration lines on the tissue. The guide is very complete and full of tips including no-fail double-welt pockets. The lined jacket is in a waist length, medium length, and a longer "boyfriend" jacket length. Be sure to use our PerfectFuse interfacings for great results.

McCall's 6116 Classic Fit: The Perfect Shirtdress

A Flattering Dress
This armhole princess shirtdress includes bust and other alteration lines on the tissue and fitting instructions in the guidesheet. The flattering "V" neckline can be made with or without a collar. The A-line skirt is great for full hips and thighs.  Make it sleeveless or choose from three sleeve lengths with or without tabs. The optional patch pockets with button flaps are nice for small-busted women who prefer not to wear a bra, as the pockets add privacy. Wear this with the optional self-fabric sash or a purchased belt.

 McCall's 6082 The Perfect Pull-on Pants

The Very Cute One-Hour
Pull-on Pant

Plus--learn to fit!

This pant is for stretch wovens or knits. You can even sew it in a regular woven, but you may need to add a zipper. Even though the pant looks gathered at the waist on the model, it won't on you if you follow our fit instructions. The model's waist is 10" smaller than her hips. That is not the case for most of us.

I sewed VIEW C/D with the yoke in a knit in just one hour. It is totally sewn by machine. Even the hem is machine topstitched. Of course, you will need to add time for tissue fitting and cutting your fabric, but I think three hours is ample to plan for if you have one stretch of time in which to sew.

VIEWS  A/B have a 5/8"-wide fold-over casing for 1/2" elastic, side slits in both cropped and long views, and is for knits and stretch wovens.  It has a narrower leg than Views C/D. Make this your "basic" pull-on pant that, once fitted, you can sew over and over in any fabric.

VIEWS C/D have a 3"-wide contour yoke in two lengths and is for knits. It used a 1" elastic at the top of the yoke. I love this view. It has a little more fashion to it and I show you how to fit the yoke in the guide. The 1" elastic sewn inside the yoke to the yoke facing doesn't show at all from the outside. See our Spring 2010 Fashion For Real People FREE e-magazine for photos of me sewing this view.

Both views are 1" below the natural waistline.

McCall's 6076 Classic Fit: The Perfect Shirt

The Perfect Fit Blouse That Flatters

Oprah said that this collar is one of the most flattering for a woman to wear. The good news is that it is easier to sew than one with a notch. I decided to make this blouse even better and included a shoulder and armhole princess front as well as a side panel with a short dart. If you want to learn to fit a full bust, this pattern has our latest alteration lines for princess printed on the tissue. Just follow the fit instructions in the guidesheet. The back is a shoulder princess in all views with alteration lines for the common fit issues. Be sure to buy the pattern by your "snug" high bust measurement.

 McCall's 6042 The Perfect Suit

The Pretty, Feminine Suit
The jacket in this pattern is easy to sew and flattering to wear. The French dart curves from the lower front to the bust. There is an option of a band collar. The sleeve has a slit and the bottom and can be folded back for a shorter look. The skirt is easy to fit, with front and back panel seams. You can sew the seams to shape around your derriere, if you have one that should be shown off! The pant is a classic, with a trouser pocket and fly front. Both skirt and pant have a 1" waistband using our non-roll Perfect Waistband interfacing. The guidesheet includes how to fit this suit, with alteration lines printed on the tissue.

 McCall's 6028 The Perfect Sheath

The Thin, Thinner, Thinnest Dress

A fitted dress is impossible for me to buy in a store as I am pear shaped. I challenged EVERY boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to find me a fitted dress. They said, "no problem." Well, I dress to camouflage, so I fooled them. They were bewildered when they couldn't even come close. That is when I decided that I CAN sew one. More than that, I decided I could WEAR one. Just because I can't find it in ready-mades, doesn't mean it isn't for me!

When I made this dress, I let out the lower side seams, but being careful to give myself shape where I have it, which is mainly in the back waist. This dress has many seams so you can tweak them to fit your shape, but also flatter it. AND, you can use color and line to your advantage. View A uses line and View B uses color. Put the darker color on the sides and lighter, brighter in the center.

I'd love to challenge you to play with this design, no matter what your size. Send me photos of your successes. (pati@palmerpletsch.com). Yes, any fitted dress is more of a challenge, but hopefully, the alteration lines printed on the tissue will help those of you with a full bust or round or sway back--necessary alterations for this design, if you need them. I did an article for the January 2010 issue of Vogue Pattern Magazines about how to think outside the box for making a full bust adjustment on this design. The info is also in the guidesheet.

McCall's 5974 The Perfect Knit Dress

MISSES & WOMEN'S DRESSES  Isn't it fun to see the same pattern on a slim and a fuller figure on the same envelope! These dresses have bodice variations with front pleats, neckline variations, self-faced midriff, pleated skirt front, back zipper and sleeves in three lengths. If you are small busted, you might be able to skip the zipper and pull the dress over your head. Try this when pin-fitting the fabric.

McCall's 5941 The Perfect Pant Suit

MISSES UNLINED JACKET IN THREE LENGTHS AND PANTS
This unlined jacket/vest in three lengths has kimono sleeves with an underarm slit, standup collar, and snap closure. The pants have two leg widths and have self-faced yoke and fly front zipper. The upper edge of yoke is at waistline. The jacket/vest can be worn with a sweater for winter or with a camisole in the summer. My favorite winter time fabric for this vest is wool coating. It is very fast, requires no interfacing as the coating has lots of body.
Sizes  BB (8-14), FF (16-22)

Reg. price is $16.95
Our price is $9.95

 McCall's 5894 The Perfect Jean

MISSES & WOMEN'S JEANS
After trying on many ready-made jeans, I found the boot-legged shape of the leg in View B to be the most flattering. It is tighter in the thigh area and flares slightly below the knee. View A is a straight leg style. Both come up to the waistline, but you can make them ride lower or higher by using the fit help in the guidesheet and the alteration lines printed on the tissue.

(TIP: Use the no-fail welt pocket technique from Jackets for Real People, but first fuse the pocket raw edges together from the wrong side before beginning.) The dress is lined to the edges and has back and front pleats and darts, back zipper and a slit at the hem. The pants have a fly front (you could change it to a back zipper if you’d prefer), self-faced yoke, and back darts.

 McCall's 5767 The Perfect Coat

MISSES' LINED COATS IN THREE LENGTHS, BELT, AND TOTES
This is a FABULOUS coat. It is EASY to sew with its straight lines, stand-up collar with the buttonhole in the seam, and the hidden placket. Sew the buttonholes in a double layer strip of interfaced fabric (use PerfectFuse Sheer.) and stitch it to the facing. Later when you topstitch the placket, your buttonholes will stay put. It is soooo much easier than sewing buttonholes in a wool coating.  Make it out of wool, raincoat fabric, or our favorite--Ultrasuede. We have included tips in the guidesheet for Ultrasuede and recommend our book Sewing Ultrasuede Fabric for more details. If you want a roomier coat, trim the tissue to one size larger and tissue-fit to see if that works for you. The Tote that comes with it is a great companion.

HOW TO BUY THE RIGHT SIZE PATTERN:

To get the correct neck, armhole, and chest fit, measure your "high bust" and use that as the bust measurement on the charts below. It emulates a B bra cup size. If you are larger than a B, you may need to do a bust adjustment. Palmer/Pletsch designs have alteration lines on the tissue to make altering easy.
