M7260 The Knit Wardrobe

Classic pieces with a creative twist. The assymetrical hem on the pullover top with bias neck and armhole facings can be worn under the shorter jacket or vest or hidden under the longer jacket. The jacket or shirt doesn't button, is unlined, and is easy to sew. The pant has a cuff or elastic casing at the ankle, a very new trend. The waist is also a casing. The guidesheet and tissue offer fit help so you can sew this design from either knits or woven fabrics.

Available in sizes A5 (6-14) and E5 (14-22)

Reg. price is $19.95
Our price is $10.95

M7169 The Figure-Flattering Dress

The dress gives you the option to color block. For a slimming look, use the lightest brightest color for the front and back panels and a darker color for the sides. We eliminated the waist seam in the front panel because most of us have a waist indent in the back, but not always in the front. Lace is popular and this simple dress allows for using lace over all of the pieces or just a few. You choose.

Available in sizes B5 (8-16) and RR (18W-24W)

M7092 Designer Knit Raised-Waist Tops and Dresses

I love the "new look" of FASHION knit tops and dresses made from poly/spandex in prints and solids. They are drapier than a cotton or poly/cotton and work perfectly for this design. A knit that is really stretchy may cause neckline droop. You could adjust for that in your first pin fitting, but a poly/spandex will be more stable and easier. Also, be sure you cut with the stretchiest direction going AROUND the body so you won’t get "neckline droop." Once you have fitted this top, sewn it once to perfect the fit, you can then sew it over and over in the same type of fabric. I’ve included lots of tips in the guide for fitting this top. M7059 Misses Sew and Go Knit Wardrobe

This is the perfect pattern for an easy-to-wear fashion knit wardrobe. It’s stylish as well as easy care for travel. The new waterfall jacket can also be a vest. The six-gored skirt and the slim pant have a 1" elastic waistline. The tee has a relaxed fit. The long sleeve tee can be layered with the vest. Use all solid jerseys, lightweight ponte, sweaterknits, and poly interlock knits. For more interest mix prints, solids, and textures. Use a sweater knit or jersey for the jacket and poly interlock for the tee. For Creative Ideas for the Tee and Tips for Knits, click here...

Treat yourself to a coat that is ultra-easy to sew. This unlined coat is designed for medium to heavy weight knits, sweater knits, double-faced knits, sweatshirt fleece, and double knit. The shawl collar and the hooded collar can be sewn to any of the views, so if you want the vest without the hood, use the front for C/D.

McCall's 6964 Perfect Fit Fashion Tee

I love the “new look” of FASHION Tees. They are made in poly, poly/spandex, rayon blends, bamboo and more. They are drapier than a cotton or poly/cotton tee, though you certainly can use any of the fabrics I’ve mentioned and have a very versatile pattern. Once you have fitted it, sew it over and over. I’ve included lots of tips in the guide for fitting knits. This design has 1 ¼” bust ease, 5 ½” waist ease , and 3” hip ease.

McCall's 6963 Perfect Fit Cowl Top

Lynn Raasch, a former traveling Palmer/Pletsch instructor, came to my home wearing a cowl top she sewed from our pattern McCall’s 6282. She said it was her favorite cowl; just the perfect amount of front neck drape. But she eliminated the center back seam, zipper, lining, and shirring. I loved the idea of making this a new pattern design as we’d already perfected how to fit it in different knits. I asked McCall’s to make this one not quite as fitted as the shirred top, but keep the high and low cowl options. Some people prefer less bare and others like a lower neck in the front.

If you are full busted and want to transfer the horizontal bust to the neckline, the cowl will become lower, so use View C or D. I’ve included lots of tips in the guide for fitting and for knits. This design has 1 ½” bust ease, 3” waist ease, and 1 ½” hip ease.

Fusible stay tapes work well in knits. Check them out...

 McCall's 6932 3-Hour Perfect Shirt

When our previous camp shirt was discontinued it left a void for one of our key teachers, Jean Baxter from Granite Bay, CA. She said it is the perfect garment to fit to her students, since they love a classic shirt. So, I mentioned this to McCall's and VOILA! it is back. This camp shirt is not as oversized as our previous one, which had a very dropped shoulder, but it is not fitted either. If your size feels too oversized, trim down to the next smaller size—it is the beauty of multi-sizing. I used to sew the small and for this one I sew the medium.

The shirt is a great companion to our 3-Hour Shirt DVD. Just follow along with Marta while sewing the shirt. If you are a teacher, offer a 3-hour Shirt class!

We have specialized in teaching shirt-making over the years. We keep trying to improve fit, speed, and quality. We have added alteration lines to the tissue to speed up altering the shirt to fit. We have used the one-piece “Painless Placket” sleeve for Views C/D, first in our book Mother Pletsch’s Painless Sewing. I credit Marta Alto for “inventing” it for sewing. She had seen it used in European men’s shirts. This camp shirt has a convertible collar.

These semi-fitted shirts have a collar, back pleated into self-lined yoke with forward shoulder seams, and narrow hem. View A: bias armhole facings, back longer than front, wrong side shows. View B: stitched hem on sleeves. Views A, B and C: pockets with mock bands. View D: shaped hemline. Views C and D: two-piece effect sleeves with pleats, seam opening and button cuffs.

We recommend using PerfectFuse Sheer interfacing
on this shirt.

 McCall's 6901  Misses & Women's Pants

This is our new pant fit teaching pattern!

I have been waiting for 12 years to redo our pant fit teaching pattern. I had a long wish list for McCall's. One was to find a way to have more sizes in one package so our pant fit instructors would never run out of a size. This new pattern has the most complete pant fitting guidesheet I've ever written, including the new pant fit order to help you stay on track. That new fitting order is also in the second edition of Pants For Real People. This pattern gives you instructions for fitting and sewing a plain pant without pockets and with a back invisible zipper as well as sewing trouser pockets and a fly front. For a teacher near you, see our certified teachers on our website or sign up for a 4-day intense pant fitting and sewing workshop in Seattle, Portland, Philadelphia, and Michigan. We've added a 2-day workshop in Michigan.

These semi-fitted, tapered pants have a waistband, side front pockets and a front mock fly zipper. Instructions are also given for an optional invisible back zipper and for eliminating pockets.Designed for medium-weight wovens,

All sizes in one envelope.

McCall's 6891 Misses Retro Dress with Sash

There is a story behind every pattern. A woman from Idaho sent me a picture of a 1947 dress and said she wanted that design. McCall's loved it and said it would be great as a Palmer/Pletsch pattern since I could include our alteration lines on the tissue and fit throughout the guide and this dress requires good fit!! It may be attractive to young sewers as well and will introduce those busty hour-glass figures to fit.

These retro-styled dresses have a collar, semi-fitted bodice, and narrow hem. View C: stitched hems on sleeves. View D: buttoned tab, wrong side shows. Views B and D: two-piece sleeves with pleats, seam opening and button cuffs. Views C and D: sash. They're designed for medium-weight wovens.

 McCall's 6841 Easy-to-Sew, Easy-to-Wear Knit Top

For this knit top, you'll need a fabric that is lightweight and has enough weight to drape and not billow out. It can be a knit or a woven for View A. A knit is better for Views B and C. Fold the fabric you are considering into a drapey front just like the front in this design and hold it to your front. Does it look good on you? If you want a sheer fabric, georgette may drape better than chiffon. Silk may drape better than polyester. A lightweight rayon knit can be perfect. Some polyester interlocks can work as well. You be the judge.

This top is lovely in a sheer fabric, but consider what you will wear under it. You might like View A with the racer back as a swim cover up. If it will be a blouse, a strapless bra will not show shoulder straps; however, it is not uncommon today to see bra or camisole straps to the sides of the racer back. For Views B and C, this is less of a problem. You could simply wear a camisole under these views if made in a sheer fabric.

These tops are so easy to sew, but the pieces are odd shapes. To help you match pieces when pinning them together, snip mark ¼" into the edge of the fabric when cutting. Snip all of the notches, circles, fold lines, and centers.

Because these tops can be made out of very soft, slippery fabrics, I saved time by machine basting seams together first using a 5 mm stitch length. I chose to then serge my seams with a ¾-thread seam. For heavier knits a 3-thread seam is fine. See tips in the guide sheet if you don’t own a serger.

Never have a fit disaster. Follow our tips for tissue-fitting and altering the pattern before you ever cut it out of fabric. We’ve had to be very inventive on how to fit this top for a full bust. Read the guide before you start. Use a sweater knit, a jersey in a solid or a print. Wear it with one side sleeveless or with a matching or contrast sleeve. Add a kimono sleeve top or dress to your wardrobe. This design has a bit of fashion boldness to make it stunning on you. It is great for many figure types. It can be a top to wear with skinny pants or a comfy dress for work or lounging at home. It is perfect sewn in a ponte weight double knit. It is best if the two colors are similar weights. Never have a fit disaster. Follow our tips for tissue-fitting and altering the pattern before you ever cut it out of fabric. The neckline is one that flatters most women by framing the face. The vertical darts will accentuate your small waist. What? No small waist? Then just ignore them. You can even straighten the side seam to take the shape out of it! View A has a cut-in armhole, most flattering for a sleeveless blouse. View B has a cuffed ¾-length sleeve. View C has long sleeves with a wide cuff. If you want guaranteed comfort, sew this blouse in a stretch cotton!

McCall's 6709 Raglan Sleeve Jacket With Back Pleat

One of our workshop students said to me, “Please do a raglan sleeve jacket as I want to learn how to fit that style.” So, students’ wishes reign supreme. When we wrote Fit for Real People, there were absolutely NO raglan style patterns to play with, so we used common sense and wrote away. When McCall’s sent me the tracing for this pattern, I had a chance to try all the common alterations by making it up for me. I learned a lot and will share with you in this guidesheet, written this time from experience, not conjecture!

 McCall's 6513 Figure-Flattering Wrap Tops

Wrap tops are very feminine and great to wear, especially when they fit correctly. The lighter-weight knits are very forgiving in wrap style tops, so unless you have large adjustments to make, you could bypass smaller ones you usually make, except for broad back, forward shoulder, and high and low round back. If you are a C bra cup size, even though patterns are made for a B, you can get away without altering for a full bust. However, if you are very full busted, you will get a better fit by altering. See tips in the guidesheet.

Views A/B have gathers across the tummy which will camouflage if you have "fluff" there. Views C/D have gathers on one side and from the neck creating diagonal gathers over the front, which are very feminine. The wrap is high enough that you won’t have to worry about too much cleavage showing or the front gapping when you bend over.

Don’t waste time sewing a garment that doesn’t fit! Tissue-fit the pattern before you cut. To make altering easier, we have placed alteration lines on the pattern tissue for the most common adjustments. Tuck or cut and spread at these lines until the pattern fits you.

A note about knits. Most of the time, you don't want the knit to STREEEEEETCH to fit you and show every little lump and bump on your body. However, for this top, you will want some stretch because of the waist gathers.  f in doubt about how tight you want your knit to fit, then tissue-fit as if it were a woven. You can always take in the side seams to make the top tighter. That is why we also tell you when to pin-fit your fabric. The pattern is drafted pretty much to body measurements with little or no ease added. If your measurements are the same as your pattern, it should fit in lightweight knits. If the knit is heavier and firm, you will want more ease.  Sizes A5 (6-14) and E5 (14-22)

 McCall's 6464 Misses' Dress

Dress with Lined Bodice

This is a figure-flattering dress with a lined bodice, front darts and side back seams, and darted skirt. All the sleeve variations are interchangeable. The high waist curves up in the front creating a flattering angle. The center front panel adds vertical lines. If you have a full waist or thighs, choose the A-line skirt. The tissue has alteration lines to help you achieve a perfect fit. Glance through the guide before you begin!

 McCall's 6440 Misses' Pant

Skinny Pant with Contour Waistline.
A skinny pant with a contour waistline and an optional pocket below the front band. Loosen up the fit if you plan to use it for your cell phone! The hem has design options: plain, invisible side zipper, slits, or self cuffs. Because there is a seam over your derriere, we have suggested that is where to take the pattern in to fit your shape, even if you are flat in the back. Follow the tissue-fitting and fabric-fitting instructions in the guidesheet.

Stretch fabrics will give you more bending power in this fitted pant. If you use wool gabardine or other non-stretch fabric, try bending and sitting with the side seams pinned. If uncomfortable, let out the 1” side seam allowances from upper hip to the thighs until you can easily sit.

 McCall's 6399 Misses' Tops

The Day-to-Evening Top for Knits,
Wovens, or Stretch-Wovens

I love this feminine top with neckline and sleeve options. Soft tucks replace darts at the bustline, neckline, and waist. It is pretty fitted with just 2” bust ease, which makes it perfect when cut on the bias or from a knit. If you use a stretch woven or knit, cut so the most stretch is horizontal, going around your body. When fitting, decide if you need the side zipper opening. Pin or baste the side seams and if you can get it on over your head, you can eliminate the zipper and make it easier to sew.

McCall's 6172 Classic Fit: The Perfect Jacket

The New 8-Hour Blazer by Pati Palmer

A little history: What do John Molloy, Family Circle Magazine, 1980, and Pati Palmer have in Common?

By total coincidence, in 1980 Family Circle approached Pati to write an article on sewing blazer jackets for women. At the same time, she was designing the innovative 8-hour Blazer, her first pattern  for McCall’s. John Molloy's book Dress for Success was catching on. He told women that if they wanted to get ahead in the corporate world, they needed to dress like men. Timing is everything. There were no blazers for women at retail, so women sewed them. Pati's pattern sold more copies than any pattern in history that year--one million copies.

On this 30-year anniversary of Pati Palmer designing for McCall's, she has developed the latest edition of her 8-hour blazer pattern, even more innovative than the first, focusing on the latest technology in shaping fabrics and in fitting today's female figure. The many seams allow for great fitting opportunities. There are alteration lines on the tissue. The guide is very complete and full of tips including no-fail double-welt pockets. The lined jacket is in a waist length, medium length, and a longer "boyfriend" jacket length. Be sure to use our PerfectFuse interfacings for great results.

McCall's 6076 Classic Fit: The Perfect Shirt

The Perfect Fit Blouse That Flatters

Oprah said that this collar is one of the most flattering for a woman to wear. The good news is that it is easier to sew than one with a notch. I decided to make this blouse even better and included a shoulder and armhole princess front as well as a side panel with a short dart. If you want to learn to fit a full bust, this pattern has our latest alteration lines for princess printed on the tissue. Just follow the fit instructions in the guidesheet. The back is a shoulder princess in all views with alteration lines for the common fit issues. Be sure to buy the pattern by your "snug" high bust measurement.

 McCall's 6028 The Perfect Sheath

The Thin, Thinner, Thinnest Dress

A fitted dress is impossible for me to buy in a store as I am pear shaped. I challenged EVERY boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to find me a fitted dress. They said, "no problem." Well, I dress to camouflage, so I fooled them. They were bewildered when they couldn't even come close. That is when I decided that I CAN sew one. More than that, I decided I could WEAR one. Just because I can't find it in ready-mades, doesn't mean it isn't for me!

When I made this dress, I let out the lower side seams, but being careful to give myself shape where I have it, which is mainly in the back waist. This dress has many seams so you can tweak them to fit your shape, but also flatter it. AND, you can use color and line to your advantage. View A uses line and View B uses color. Put the darker color on the sides and lighter, brighter in the center.

I'd love to challenge you to play with this design, no matter what your size. Send me photos of your successes. ( Yes, any fitted dress is more of a challenge, but hopefully, the alteration lines printed on the tissue will help those of you with a full bust or round or sway back--necessary alterations for this design, if you need them. I did an article for the January 2010 issue of Vogue Pattern Magazines about how to think outside the box for making a full bust adjustment on this design. The info is also in the guidesheet.

McCall's 5941 The Perfect Pant Suit

This unlined jacket/vest in three lengths has kimono sleeves with an underarm slit, standup collar, and snap closure. The pants have two leg widths and have self-faced yoke and fly front zipper. The upper edge of yoke is at waistline. The jacket/vest can be worn with a sweater for winter or with a camisole in the summer. My favorite winter time fabric for this vest is wool coating. It is very fast, requires no interfacing as the coating has lots of body.

To get the correct neck, armhole, and chest fit, measure your "high bust" and use that as the bust measurement on the charts below. It emulates a B bra cup size. If you are larger than a B, you may need to do a bust adjustment. Palmer/Pletsch designs have alteration lines on the tissue to make altering easy.
