M6791 Pattern Asymmetric Knit Dress
I love this dress in a moderate stretch lightweight jersey knit; the lighter weight is great because of the multiple layers. The pleats taken at the side seam have a concealing effect across the midsection making the asymmetric dress flattering on all body types. Asymmetry is one of my favorite design elements, it brings interest and uniqueness to simple designs, which I’m also a fan of!
A brief look inside the guide sheet, we give you all this and more including how to tissue fit for each specific design!
FabricTip: Picking your material is greatly important; by taking your time to invest in sewing yourself something special, make sure the fabric is special too. Inexpensive jerseys pill and wear out quickly, so make sure to invest your money, not just your time, in making a beautiful dress in a fabric of equal value.
Fit/Sewing Tips: In sewing knits, you want to use a ballpoint needle in your serger or regular sewing machine. I suggest to sew most of the dress with a serger so you will have clean, finished seams on the inside and quicker sewing time. For those using a sewing machine, sew your seams with a short and narrow zigzag stitch. Knits are an easier fit than woven fabrics so fit the pattern snug to your body; knits are forgiving and not meant to be baggy in this case!
Design Tips: Leave the bottom and cut out edges raw if you are using a knit jersey that won’t ravel — it’s a nice easy design detail and will avoid bulk at the bottom of your skirt hems.
Choose a sleeve length that works for you, since you don’t need to hem the sleeve just cut it off where you like! Sometimes ¾ or ½ sleeves are more flattering.
In styling, you can stitch up the open back slightly higher for a day look or leave it as is for an open-back evening look. Make the sleeveless full back version for a fun warm weather dress and the long sleeve, open back style for Fall and Winter evening festivities, I have even layered a tank top underneath, or wear a jacket for a work look.
